Chittoor in 1901 : Gazetteer of South India


 

 Chittoor Town : (also know as Chittur) Head-quarters of North Arcot District, Madras, and of the taluk of the same name, situated in the valley of the poini river, on the South India Railway 18 miles north of Katpadi junction, and 100 miles ny road from Madras.Population (1901), 10,893.Being 990 feet above the sea,during the winter months, it is pleasantly cool: but in former years it suffered frm more than one outbreak of virulent fever, and in consequence the head quarters of come of the District staff were moved to VELLORE. The place was a military station untill 1874, but is now, except as the official centre, of no importance.It contains most of the usual courts and offices and a Roman Catholic chapel.
